I have been a member since 2003 and this morning i went in person to apply for an auto loan. The Loan officer Mrs. Ford was very rude, she never asked me to the back to speak in private, instead I was forced to answer all personal questions in the lobby. After feeling like the bank was looking for a reason NOT to give me a loan, i was told Nstar doesn't give auto loans for vehicles over 10yrs old!!! this bank is the worst and they are very rude. I tired of the lack of respect to the members, take down the speaker phone at the front door it not a prison!!!!! WORST BANK EVER!!!!

I was referred to this CU by a friend, when discussing I wanted to refinance my truck. I open my account online, applied for the loan. Received call from Angela stating loan was approved. Went into the George Washington branch finalized paperwork with Kali Irwine that was 4 years or more ago. I have since refinance a second vehicle. The customer service I have received has been superb. In my opinion they go over and beyond to satisfy their members. Thank you NSCU.

      Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your kind words, Faye. We appreciate your membership. Cheers, Northern Star Credit Union

This credit union is unsat...Its online service has to be the worse I have ever used. I went to the store and debit was declined. They cancelled it mistakingly...Called to get issue corrected and sent to voice mail three times. No call back for a day so no use of card. You get sent to voice mail and have to leave a message with any problem you have which I find totally unsat. If I wasnt on plan with parents I would immediately leave. I highly recommend you use any other credit union you can find.

      Response from the owner

Thank you for reaching out to us, Mr. Hill. There are multiple reasons why your card may decline: 1) POS/system error, 2) the purchase amount exceeds the available funds in your account, or 3) the chip no longer functions. Emergency numbers are listed at the bottom of our website to assist members. Additionally, our secure messaging through Home Banking or the Mobile App is the fastest way to receive a response. We hope this helps and appreciate your membership, Northern Star Credit Union

I hate to leave a bad review, but I feel I need to advise that this bank is very user-unfriendly. Not being able to make a payment over-the-phone or online has been my #1 reason to refinance my auto loan. Couple that with staff not answering the phones in a timely manner (over the course of 3 days), as well as information not being relayed properly which has caused unnecessary stress... I have to bow out.

      Response from the owner

Thank you for your feedback, Shantea. We are sorry to hear we've fallen short of your expectations. Due to the economic relief payments, our phone lines have been busier than usual this year and, for security reasons, we do not take payments over the phone. We invite you to take advantage of our digital features, like Bill Pay or our online Secure Message Center, to make payments or speak directly with our team. We do appreciate your membership.

I have banked here my whole life. They have alway been helpful until this year. I always put up with them not being open on the weekend and having to drive 30 minutes on a Saturday to use another bank that does Northern Star deposits when the main branch is 5 minutes from my house. Oh and if you need to talk to a human forget that, you never can get anyone on the phone. Convenient is not a word that comes to mind with this bank, i loved the worker that are out front working so i put up with alot. This year i was pushed into closing my accounts with them. They do not do instant photo deposits like everyother banks do, and if you work Monday thru Friday you will never be able to use them anyway with no weekend hours. What pushed me over the edge was them taken money out of one of my accounts for inactivity and not given me any notice. Like i said before i have banked with them my whole life since i was 14 when i opened my account, i am now 50. Policies change over the years i understand that but i never got any written notice nor did any teller ever say that if an account is not being use that they take money from you. If you have more than one account i was always told they are linked together if that is the case how can one be inactive. So they took money from me with no notice. It took me hours of asking for my money back i got no where near we they took from me back. The person that made that decision never would come out and talk to me. Another lady relayed messages back and forth. All i was told was i need to take responsibility for not keeping up with all my accounts. What kind of answer is that. I had even at one point years before was going to close out that one account i had even had tge teller make name for the othet account in my main account. See you can name multiple accounts under one account like savings checking Christmas Club whatever name you would like. I had them create the name under my main account and ask them to move the funds over. I was told by the teller at that point that i could move the money but it would be silly to do so because the accounts are linked and i would take a hit on my credit for closing one of the accounts which is true. When i told them this i was told since i could not give them a name of who it was they could not help me. Do you know within 40-something years how many tellers came and went at the bank so how in the world am i supposed to give them a name. Every teller notes the account every time you make a deposit or withdrawal so they knew exactly who told me that information. And again I was told pretty much it was my fault that they took my money because I did not keep up with my account. This is a bank when you deposit your money and leave it there you expect for it to be safe. Not come back a year or two later and have most of your money gone because lack of notice.

It seems as if this bank do not want to do their job. My father passed and my sister has given them the executor document to access the account and to get any information needed. She has called and left messages as well as sent emails and no response. We are going through a very difficult time and this doesn't make it no better.

      Response from the owner

Hello Chantel, we understand this is a difficult time for your family and are sorry for your loss. Our branch manager has been keeping your sister informed throughout the process via email and by phone. Due to the confidentiality of this account, we are happy to address any additional concerns you may have through our secure message system available through Home Banking and our Mobile App. Sincerely, Northern Star Credit Union

Travis the manager is very unprofessional I asked him I wanted to speak to somebody in the loan department who was over him he would not let me and continue to be quiet. I ask him to answer a question.i suggest you do not use this credit Union at all they took my car for $49 they do not care about your well-being so if you go get a car and they try to use this credit Union do not do it if you do u will lose your car. They gave me a car with no cosigner then turn around and said I need one after I was late . An I will be calling corporate.

      Response from the owner

I've been a member for about 28 years. They've treated me like family. That's not to say everything has been perfect but they've genuinely "got my back" and aren't "out to get me." In today's world that's saying something. I used to have my mortgage through them. A trustee in Portsmouth actually loaned me the money through them. No transfer of the loan. Where do you find that top to bottom hometown support anymore? I've lived in 4 different states with over 4 years in each. Never have i found higher savings rates. That's why I keep money here.

      Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your kind words and longstanding membership, Pete. We try to take care of our members by offering products they can't find anywhere else, like our high-yield checking and savings accounts. Cheers, Northern Star Credit Union

I used to have a good relationship with this institution. I recently came to them with a problem due to Covid-19. they asked me if I had received my stimulus check to which I replied no even though I had. They got back in contact with me the next day and told me that I had received my stimulus check because they checked with the IRS. My check was earmarked for rent for the next 2 months that's why I told them I didn't have it. But it was a blatant disregard for my privacy when they went to the IRS and checked on my status of my stimulus check when I gave them no permission or expressed consent to do so. Then I had a credit card with $1,000 limit and they took my credit limit away from me without discussing it first, luckily my other financial institution granted me a credit limit increase of $1,000. I'm just appalled at the actions that they took without discussing any moves with me.

      Response from the owner

Thank you for your feedback, Uncagj. We understand you have already spoken with a manager regarding this incident.

The credit union is much and served me needs far superior to banks, there is a level of trust that I never felt using a bank. The only downside is not getting notifications in a timely manner when they arbitrarily lock my account over transactions that should be authorized

      Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your kind words, Michael. We really appreciate your membership. Cheers, Northern Star Credit Union
