1st MidAmerica Credit Union Reviews

Charles Wiegand1When this was Olin Credit Union, the services were excellent and the customer interactions outstanding! As is often the case, they became bigger, changed their name and everything has gone steadily downhill ever since. I watched the same thing happen to Scott Credit Union. Once these banks start thinking they're highly important to the community, they concurrently start acting like you're not at all important. Way too big for their britches. I'd steer clear and look for a financial institution that at least acts like they care for your business.

Brandie Hughson1I was scheduled for laser eye surgery the next morning at 7 am and needed to have my debit card daily limit increased from 2500 to 4100. I explained to the woman that worked for member services this and that I needed the increase to be extended past midnight as my surgery was at 7 am. She assured me this would happened but it did not. When they ran my debit card the next morning for 4100 it only would go through for 2500. Luckily I had another credit card on me but talk about embarrassing and a wasted 30 min phone call to assure me it would go through fine. 😡

Jill Adam5Switched from Regions, and so happy I did. The customer service is miles better. You talk to local people (usually I get the same rep!) and don’t get switched around between random people for an hour every time you call. Additionally, they have so many locations locally and the interest rates on checking and savings accounts is so much better.
Response from the ownerThanks for sharing your experience! We are always happy to hear about our members receiving great service.

Kristyn Brown1I will just go ahead and echo the complaints that others have posted here as of late. I contacted FMACU in May about my car payment. My finances changed and I inquired about lowing payments and paying over a longer period of time. I have never had a pleasant experience with anyone on the phone from this organization and I have had MANY phone calls because this issue never seems to get resolved. Every single person I’ve talked to has been short with me and acts like I’m wasting their time. Banking and loans are complicated for laypersons but FMACU doesn’t seem to care that not everyone knows what their doing when if comes to finances. Totally unwilling to help. 4 months later nothing has changed.

Ethan Stiverson1I can not believe how many times I've been told I would be reimbursed for a Fee I was charged while the banking system was having technical difficulties. No fault of my own this is souly the banks responsibility and after speaking with multiple employees not to mention the REGIONAL Manager who called me to resolve another negative review on the same matter. She was very respectful and professional over the phone and reassured me the issue would be resolved and I would be reimbursed within the 2-3 business days that was a week ago. I returned to the bethalto branch yesterday for another reason and once again brought up this Fee I was charged and yet again I was told I would be reimbursed and the money would post to my account today. Well when's that happen 1st mid america? This is very frustrating especially after being told multiple times this was no fault of my own and I would be promptly refunded.

Sherry Orr1Went today to go inside to simply get some checkbook registers. I was greeted outside by a young lady who asked if I had an appointment. Told her what I needed and that I would be in and out. She told me that they preferred you use the drive through. Why? I was wearing a mask! Had to get back in my car and wait in line. Would it have killed her to simply go in and get the registers for me?! What else did she have to do?! Every since it changed from Olin Credit Union, customer service has gone down the tubes!!

Chelsy McInnis2I had started my accounts here when it was Olin but overall it's been a pretty lackluster experience. They do not provide any extra benefits over other credit unions or banks. I shifted to another bank that has a better mobile and web experience as well as more locations to better suit my banking needs.

Amanda Franklin1I have banked with 1st Mid America since I was a child, and my mother banked there. I loved banking there, until I got a credit card through them. I should have known better than to get a credit card through a small credit union. Any time I have had to file fraud on a purchase I get the run around, or am given a bs answer as to why they cannot refund my money (oh you never reached out to the seller, even though I had given them handfuls of paperwork and emails showing attempts to contact). Ive had my credit card hacked and the only reason the transactions were caught was because the card maxed out. Transactions not even in this country (why would I be in a hospital in Singapore?). Every time I sit with a banker they make up the banking rules as they go and lie to my face. I am so sick of a teller telling me they will do something, then not do it. While filing credit card fraud I was transferred to so many different departments, who all told me they closed the card for me. I was able to go out and swipe the card and it WAS APPROVED. Closed? nope. The people working in the different call centers are IDIOTS.

Janice Callaway1I was charged 1400.00, for insurance on my car covering a time that was already history. For only for 3 months, and this insurance doesn't cover property and bodily damage .I am widowed. I’m not in good health but I do the right thing. My debit card from another bank expired and my car insurance was using that expired card to auto deduct payments. I didn't know this had occurred because I moved to Kentucky the same month. When I tried to rectify it, they told me I could no longer receive coverage from them because I moved to KY. I was much more concerned about getting my medical information transferred. Diabetes can be life or death without insulin. I honestly didn't understand the ramifications. At the beginning of October, I found out the insurance was astronomical because it had lapsed on my car. Wonderful! People who can barely afford insurance get the penalty of paying more if they can’t afford it in the first place. I live on a fixed income. It took me by surprise and I was unprepared for the high prices. I also did not realize that not only would I have to pay an arm and leg for insurance when I got it – but that 1st MidAmerica, had every intention of charging me for the months I did not have coverage. Originally they charged me 3603.00 I failed to memorize the fine print of my car loan contract, apparently. I had an inspection done when I got my insurance renewed. It’s documented. MidAmerica did refund 3 months but not for the 3 months that were not covered. How generous. There is no law that says a car owner must go back and backdate insurance for a car that has not been insured. The law only states that the cars must be insured. If the car is not insured, a fine is assessed to the owner – and while part of paying the fine is also getting insurance, there is NO REQUIREMENT to backdate the insurance to cover the uninsured period. MidAmerica supercharged me for a period of history and there is no law stating that they must do so. I looked up the definition of usury. While this is not the exact same situation where there is an illegal action or practice of lending money at unreasonably high rates of interest, what did happen here was that MidAmerica used an unreasonable high rate of insurance to add to my already high rate interest loan. I know moral and ethics is on my side. I checked for precedence on this. Mortgage lenders did the same thing to owners in the past. When the owners failed to produce insurance, the banks charged such a heinous amount – that it wound up in court and the courts ruled in favor of the owners. The owners got back the overages charged to them. The courts ruled: “loan provider cannot charge more than what it necessary to insure the house.” No one is going to believe 1400.00 for 3 months of insurance is necessary. My driving record alone justifies a lower amount. There is something unclear to me about why a credit union would purposely go and pick up the most expensive insurance to use against their members. At least until I looked at my interest rate. Then it all became very clear. I really don’t understand amortization, and interest compounded daily. What I do know is that 10+% is rather high for an auto loan. Add the overcharged insurance rate…I recognize that my ignorance about insurance on my car is no excuse for the period I went without insurance, nor is not having the money. I am a member who has paid 2 years on time, and any credit problems on file are due to a death in the family not irresponsible spending and credit cards. If they are going to charge 1400.00 for every 3 months of insurance coverage, I think that kind of money should be clearly stated IN ADVANCE – no surprise parties.
