Peak Resources Outer Banks Reviews

Laura Browning5My family, and I are grateful to Peak Resource staff for the amazing care they provided our mother/sister during the last 3-4 months of her life. During her stay at Peak Resources, her brother and I visited at different points of time and each witnessed nurses, aides, and support staff treating her with respect and kindness. It was obvious that they took the time to know her as a person, despite her advanced dementia. Staff shared touching and sometimes funny stories of their interactions with our mom. In her final week of her life, the staff came in every hour to ensure she was receiving the best care to help her feel comfortable. They also provided myself and our family with frequent updates, snacks and water, reassurance, and helpful assistance from the staff social worker. Thank you!

Warren J McCrickard5My mother, sister, and I want to thank the entire Peak Resource staff for the amazing care provided to our husband/father over the past month. He spent the last month of his life surrounded by a great deal of love and support from the nurses, aides, housekeeping , other staff and administration. In his last week on comfort care, the Peak Resources staff stepped up even more supremely. They were attentive to his every need; keeping him comfortable, clean and encouraged. Beyond him, they were attentive to us, the helicopter family. They answered our questions, gave us hugs and smiles galore and kept refreshments stocked. I, myself, am eternally grateful for being allowed to stay overnight for six of his final nights. It really is hard to find the words of gratitude that fully exude our appreciation to the staff. All ages, races and years of experience - if they worked at Peak, they were loving him and provided him a peaceful exit to this world.

Sabrina SC5Peak Resources of Outer Banks is a premiere skilled rehab facility. The staff is very skilled and adept at providing great service to their patients and residents. Therapeutic programs center around functional improvement and recovery for all stages while closely working with nursing staff to manage the patients overall health and well-being. They have an amazing patient success rate

John Boyce1If I could give negative stars I would. My father was there early in 2017 and received decent care. He had to go back later in the year and was treated very poorly. Bandages weren't changed. Meals were always late and cold and missing items. The nurses are rough when they handle the patients, flop them around in and out of the beds. Devices that needed to be flushed regularly were not being flushed. Pain medicine was being withheld after an amputation. The call bells are ignored during the night. Some of the nurses even told me that there have been problems before with a shift in particular over night with the nurses ignoring call bells and not taking care of their patients. They "lost" one of my dad's appointments and missed a second one due to the medical transport being late. The bed side commodes aren't emptied after being used. My father was supposed to be on 24 hour/day IV meds and they were disconnected ALL THE TIME. He had a transport scheduled to take him to an out of town follow up appointment by a medical transport ambulance with IV medicine capabilities, the nurses at Peak unhooked his IV and sent him without his meds even after I double checked MULTIPLE times. The admin staff acts like your friends at first, they are wolves in sheep's clothing. There are a couple up there that you can tell are not comfortable doing what they are most likely being told to do but they still do it. The PT and OT staff are good though

Sandy Mccrickard5Recently my husband was sent to Peak. At first it was for rehabilitation. He had melanoma in his brain. Each person that worked with him was great. They helped him as much as he would let them. He did not want to eat and they sat and fed him. The physical therapist, speech therapist and even the dietician tried their best to help him. When he began to have seizures, they sent him to the hospital. After he was released he returned to Peak. He refused food and medicine. They were patient and kind to him always encouraging him to do the things he needed to get better. Unfortunately, his brain cancer took his life. At the end they gave, him comfort care that was amazing. They gently turned him so that his skin would not have sore spots. They held his his hands, lotioned his dry skin, talked to him and took care of his personal needs in a very competent and caring manner. They reached out to my family and visitors of his with love and professionalism. We felt their care in so many ways. Words cannot express my gratitude for such good and loving care at such a time as this. I thank them for all they did. They helped to make it the very best they could at the worst time in life for all of us.

Patty Kish5I cannot possibly say how grateful I am to Peak Resources for the kind and compassionate care that they are giving my mother. She has been in rehabilitation centers 3 times following hospitalizations and this has been, by far, the best experience we've had. Beth and her whole physical therapy staff and have been so wonderful with my mother - encouraging, cheerleading and pushing when necessary. They treat her with compassion and dignity and that had not been our experience at the other rehabilitation centers in Barco and Chesapeake. The nurse, cna's, and even the nutrition staff have gone above and beyond to provide excellent loving care. What has impressed me more than anything else is that the doctor has seen my mother 3 times in the 4 days since she's arrived. He's there now...on a Saturday afternoon! I never saw a doctor in the other rehabilitation centers- and you need to know that when you go into a rehabilitation center you can no longer see your primary care physician...you have to be treated by the doctor who is contracted to that facility. I realize that the previous owners of this facility had let it deteriorate and its reputation suffered (under a different name) but I can tell you that the new owners are renovating the facility top to bottom and this is such an incredible resource for those of us retiring here on the Outer Banks! Thank you!

JoAnne Junkin4My Husband has been a patient here several times in the past few years and we have always been very pleased. So, when he needed nursing care and rehabilitation I was very excited and gladly pay $3000 to have him transported from Washington DC to Nags Head yesterday . He can no longer speak, has a feeding tube as well as Parkinson’s disease.Tonight I cannot sleep for worry. Last night while I was with him He indicated he was in pain so I went to the nurse’s station to ask about him getting pain meds since they had told me they could not order his meds until today. I had brought some of his pain meds with me but was told by the nurse that they had the one he needed and she would go and pull the one and bring it and give him. After about 45 minutes I went out and there was a different nurse on duty and he said no one had told him about my husband needing something for pain. He went immediately and got and administered the pain meds through my husband's feeding tube. From everything I have read and been told in DC the feeding tube must be flushed after the medication is given to make sure that the patient gets the full dose as well as no medication gets stuck in the feeding tube causing it to have to be replaced. The nurse did not flush the tube after administering the pain meds. I mentioned it to the nurses and someone at the desk as I left as being a concern. Today I spent eight hours with my husband. A nurse came in twice to give him his medications (She did it correctly with a flush) and an aid came in when I first got there to check and see if he needed his diaper changed. In eight hours that was only three visits from anyone. They are aware he cannot talk, he cannot push a button to ask for help and he is a big fall risk. If I had not been there he would have laid there totally alone except for those three short visits by personnel. I cannot return tonight and I am worried sick about him. I know that right now due to a bacterial UTI you have to put on a gown and gloves when entering his room and I believe that the personnel find that a bother. It seems that they will only come in when they absolutely have to. If he had soiled his diaper or fallen off the bed between those three times and I had not been there, what would’ve happened to him? At the least, he would have had a terrible diaper rash from laying in his own feces for eight hours. If he had rolled off the bed, no one would have known it until one of the nurses happened to come in to give him meds. If he had needed help and cannot push the button there is no telling what could’ve happened to him. I tried to call but I guess on weekends and after hours no one is available to answer the main number. I have always loved the Peak when he was getting around in a wheelchair and could speak and call for help but right now I am walking the floor and crying because I’m so worried about him. We have always loved the nurses, techs and administration there. When he could help himself and they didn’t have to don gowns and gloves they were always popping into his room every couple of minutes with smiles on their faces to have just a pleasant conversation With him. Do I have to remain with him 24 hours a day to make sure he isn’t just laying alone hour after hour or in need of help he may not get? I am worried and questioning my decision to bring him back. He is my life and I want them to treat him like he was their husband or father.....with care, concern!

Carol Castellow1I was lied to by an RN I knew & respected that works there, she assured me that it was nothing like it was previously as Britthaven & Colony Ridge. WRONG. Some of the CNA's really cared about their patients and their jobs but most seemed to be there just for the paycheck, call bells were ignored, family treated disrespectfully and they didn't seem to know anything about their patients needs. Dad was not a self feed but at least twice they put the tray in front of him and would leave and other times his tray sat there getting cold before someone fed him. Fluids were not push by the staff resulting in a UTI. Family would be in with him for hours and nobody would check to see if he needed changed or to turn him. In 1 1/2 months he had 2 showers even when repeatedly asked when his shower days were (I was told he would be assigned 2 days a week). Getting him into a wheelchair or on a potty chair was a fight. My dad was in due to a stroke to try and regain some strength and use of his left side. We were being told how good he was doing in PT but all of a sudden we were told he wasn't doing good and they were stopping all therapy. While advocating for my dad I was accused of being rude, disrespectful and demanding .I told the DoN that I was none of those I just wanted the staff to do their job. I was a CNA for 10 1/2 years so I know what the job entails. While in their care he was a 2 person assist and could not walk (still can't) they discharged him as a 1 person assist and difficulty walking. Do not send your loved ones there if they require full care because they won't get it from a majority of the staff.

Bonnie Shepard2I was in this rehab center for 8 days after my knee replacement surgery in February, 2017 and it was a challenge to stay there to say the least. I found most of the staff friendly and wanting to help but they were woefully understaffed. There was only one nurse who could distribute pain and other medication to patients in the rehabilitation wing. She also was responsible for new patients coming in. Needless to say there were many times that pain medication was received 2 to 3 hours late and sometimes more despite constant requests thru the medical assistant. They would say they told the nurse and that was all they could do. My physical therapy had to be postponed until my pain medication was administered and took effect. Thank heaven for the therapist that would intervene during the day. The physical therapy and my progress was very good. My room mate would need assistance to go to the bathroom and would ring the bell for help in plenty of time but if no one was available no one came. It was very humiliating. I asked about getting my hair washed and no one could tell me how that could be done so I ended up washing my own hair in the bathroom sink in my walker, which was better that nothing. I don't know what someone would do if they couldn't get around. Some meals were better than others but overall poor. You will fill out a questionnaire about likes and dislikes along with food allergies but no one reads them. I couldn't even get ketchup to hide the taste - they kept telling me they had no ketchup - that is crazy! The staff for the most part seemed to be trying hard but they needed help. They were trying to do a job with their hands tied behind their backs.
