First Hawaiian Bank Waiakea Branch Reviews

Travis Sanders1Horrible confusing policies. They close earlier than claimed. They only give $100 instantly available when you deposit into the ATM vs Bank of Hawaii which gives 200. Then they hold the check for days and release it to you slowly. I've had an account at both for 15 years. First Hawaiian is always messing with your available balance in a mysterious way. When you spend using your debit card in no way reflects the reduction in available balance. Pending transactions and invisible transactions stay for up to a week before finally processing. Today I got there 10 minutes before closing at 3:50 p.m. on a weekday and the lobby was already closed. The live teller machine claims to be open until 6 p.m. and it closed as well. Surprise it's Columbus Day. No courtesy sign explaining their absence. I have multiple accounts at this bank and I tried to add my wife to one of the accounts she was not on yet and they refused without jumping through all of their identification processes all over again. Months after opening one of my accounts this year I started getting monthly fees on an account that was supposed to be free. They said it was for online bill pay which I never asked for and never used. They offered to refund only half of the charges it wasn't financially worth my time arguing with them for any refund but it had to be done. I had to be very assertive to get the entire refund. Their lines are much longer than other Banks. Their debit cards will not work at the Safeway gas pump and many other gas pumps. You'll have to go in to run the card with the clerk or run as credit instead which doesn't qualify you for the discount on gasoline most places provide when you use a debit card instead of credit. This is the most inconvenient Bank I've ever dealt with in my 40 years. It's beyond me how they are among the top two banks in Hawaii. Bank of Hawaii had a little of these problems but 8 years ago they cleaned up their act and everything at Bank of Hawaii is straightforward and user-friendly now. I know this sounds very one-sided but it's not. I don't have any interest in promoting one over the other other than to help you make a better choice if you were comparing the two.
