I have been a member of this credit union for many years and it started out as one of the best decisions I'd ever made. Fast forward 2018. The are just like the money grubbing Big Banks. And you can forget speaking directly to a person unless you wait with the automated assistant for at least 7 mins. Customer service is the worst. I spoke with a Keely who placed me on hold for 8min and never came back to the phone. I will never and I mean never do business with this company nor do I recommend it for anyone else. If I could give less than one star I would. It sad because they were really good at one time. :-(

I tried to get a small loan to get me on a path to better credit but they denied me. Every single time I call they say they go out of their way to give you money because they have plenty of it but that clearly doesn't apply to me. I'm going to try one more time of I get turned down I'm moving forward to another credit union. Well Extra Credit Union denied me yet again so their slogan is ABSOLUTELY not true!

      Response from the owner

Hi Shirley, thank you for your membership and for taking the time to leave your feedback. We understand you are frustrated ... as you mentioned in your feedback, we do go out of our way to help as many people as we can, however, we still have a protocol that must be followed and certain criteria that must be met. We would be happy to put you in touch with your lender or a supervisor that could better explain your particular situation. Please let us know.

TL;DR- Leaving after 14 years to go to a credit union who is better able to take care of my needs. The Good: The tellers and member services reps are some of the friendliest, most pleasant people I've dealt with face-to-face. Kind and always try to do right by the member; they are this institution's greatest asset. The Bad: I have been a dedicated member since 2003... until now. My wife and I set up a living trust and wanted to transfer ownership of my accounts to the trust. I was told by a supervisor that this "...is no longer a service we provide" and they haven't provided trust accounts in over 5 years. Furthermore, that "we suggest that our members name the trust as the accounts' beneficiary" and that this "...is essentially the same." Wrong- naming the trust as a beneficiary negates all the benefits for having a trust established in the first place! Giving a horrible suggestion that is actually a huge disservice to their members- Strike 1. I asked why then does the Membership and Account Agreement state that trusts can own accounts? "We no longer set up trust accounts because of the extra legalities associated with them," was the response and that those types of accounts mentioned are concerning "grandfathered" accounts. Yet, the "legalities" the supervisor mentioned would still need to be dealt with if I died and the trust was the beneficiary, i.e- my accounts would need to be changed to trust accounts anyways! Nowhere in the Account Agreement does it state that trust accounts are explicitly not set up. Even the provisions in the Special Account Instructions have the implication that such an account can be established. If these services "are no longer provided", then the Account Agreement should reflect this. When I asked why the Account Agreement appears to contradict what they were saying, the response was then that the information on the website is old and needs to be updated. I then showed that the web page that hosting the agreement was last updated on April 19, 2017, and not 5 years ago, they were at a loss. If the supervisor was right, then I'm upset that the agreement contradicts the current policy. If the supervisor was wrong, then they were not properly informed as they should be as experts on the credit union's policy. Contradiction between the Account Agreement's publicly communicated policy and management's understanding of the policy - Strike 2. The final straw was that the day prior to our vacation, I called Extra CU to make note on my account of the dates I'd be overseas, and where, so that I could have access to my funds without setting off any alerts. Our first dinner on vacation and my card is being declined! To add insult to injury, I then needed to add an International Plan to my cell service just so I could call Extra CU to find out why my card was being declined. Apparently, there were no notes on my account at all about my trip- Strike 3! These 3 items (horrible "suggestion" that is a disservice, contradictory information that does not meet my needs, and being locked out of my accounts when I needed them while overseas) ruined any loyalty that 14 years had built. I have since joined another credit union, who've had no issue opening an account in the name of our trust (and shook their heads when I told them about my experience), and the checking, savings, and money market accounts with Extra CU will be fully closed by the end of this month.

We have been members of Extra Credit Union for over twenty five years, and have witnessed her growth through her transition periods, from Warren Schools credit union to Metro Credit Union and currently Extra Credit Union. Our experience with a credit union is much more personable than a bank! We are proud to be not only a member, but treated like a family member. We love the customer service and individual attention each branch provides, but our quaint, intimate Sterling Heights office is superb!

      Response from the owner

Hello June, thank you for taking the time to leave this great review! And thank you for your longstanding and loyal membership! We really do strive to give awesome member service and we are so glad that has been your experience! Please let us know if there is anything you need! We are glad to help!

Horrible customer service. Charged me from my card while I told them to cancel automatic payments a month before my last loan payment that I was going to pay off with cash.. Drive thru tellers are very slow and have horrible attitude. Came inside to talk with them and they lied about the automatic payment system and had me going in circles about a very simple issue. Glad I closed my account here. Please do not bank here.

      Response from the owner

Hello, Nadim, thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are sorry to hear you are frustrated. We strive to give excellent member service and we apologize if you received anything less. We would be happy to have someone look further into this and reach out to you. Can you please give us your name so that we can do that? Or if you'd feel more comfortable, since you can't message us here, you can email that information to [email protected]. We will also pass this along to our management team so they are aware of this issue/situation.

I have been a Bank of America customer for ages and made the switch to ECU at the recommendation of a friend. I could not be happier. They have worked with my wife step by step to help counsel us to repair our credit and qualify for better loan rates. They gave us a flexline for emergencies. All of our loans were quick and almost everytime, it was same day approval. Highly recommended.

      Response from the owner

Thank you for this great feedback, Steve! We're so glad we could help you! This is what we strive to do -- help as many people as we can to get to a successful financial future. Please let us know if you need anything else! We're here to help!

I WAS a member going back to 1983 (Warren school's credit union back then). Here is why I quite. I had an online account by did not login much, due to this inactivity they sent me a paper statement and then charged me a fee. I called a was told to open online account again. I used atm on regular basis, so account was not inactive. They had no problem mailing me offer and changing for that paper junk! I called once to get a car loan and it took several days for a return call. They were just to late, as I ended up just paying cash for car. I tried to get a boat loan and same thing, slow to react. I got that loan at another credit union. Service has gone in the dumps and I'm just glad to be out. Fyi - Cost me to quit, as in pulled as much as I could from atm ($20 smallest). I was told, I had to come for it for th rest. To small to mail check!

      Response from the owner

This bank has the right mentality to help those in bad financial standing but has poor execution. They don't communicate or followup on loan decisions to know if you are approved. They also do not value confidentiality and listen well to collect and give information to the underwriters. They disclosed my fiance information to me when I mentioned that my fiance got approved for a certain amount of money where we make close to the same amount to be approve for the same amount and has the same credit score as me. They also looked into my account with them to see what I spent which no bank does and nowhere states that they will do that on the policies and procedures. In the credit process for a flexline, they incorrectly collected and sent my income to the underwriters without verifying all the income I have and writing done the wrong amount that was previously discussed when I opened a checking account. I was denied by Loan Officer Jamie after never being contacted and lied to with previous loan officer Amanda Work. Amanda Work sent an email to my fiance without my consent stating to call her, which she never sent as my fiance looked in his emails and spam folder and was not there. Her email would not be blocked or be in spam as my fiance setup his account which she emailed to him as he went through a similar bad experience. This bank does not care about their remote bankers and cater only to their onsite bankers. Stay away from this bank at all cost. Come if you are okay with your personal information being given to others, lack of communication, them in your account going by what you spent instead of your credit history, and not listening to you as they gather and send your information wrong to the underwriters for a decision, and lies with excuses when they never contact you about your application for any financial services with them, Their are better alternatives elsewhere despite have a poor credit score and lending power. -10 stars for this bank.

      Response from the owner

My husband and I worked with Jennifer and Carmen (who were both AMAZING) on an auto loan. Some tragic life events left our credit a bit beaten. Extra Credit Union was the ONLY financial institution that actually listened to our story and took our situation into account. I really feel like we were treated like people and not an application number. Thanks to this credit union my husband was able to keep his truck. I could not be more grateful for the care and time that went into our loan. I know who I will go to when my vehicle comes off a lease in a year and I want to buy it! Thanks Extra Credit Union!
