No stars for me. The customer service is not in the USA and its so bad to speak to someone. I closed my account and they cannot access my complete account number. The worst credit card ever.

Been a member of American Express Platinum for 13 years and I also have my business cards with them. Never had a problem, until I used them to pay for a move that was never completed. I've now fought this charge 4 times and not a single person has actually heard one thing I have said and they keep siding with the moving company which does not have proof of delivery. Amex was once the best card and much like the other reviews here, they are losing their weight in the financial market and their customers are fedup. Shame. Now what do I do with the 500K points I have? Lol.

I am writing to you to notify of the terrible experience I have had with Amex since opening my card. I’m my quest to become debt free. I opened a Amex card that was linked to my personal bank. When I opened my card I didn’t receive a card for a month. I notified customer service on three separate occasions. They assured me the card would come but it never did. I then had to reach out to the corporate office who had to micromanage/baby walk the customer service through the card issuing process. Now I am sitting at a rental car facility. Where my card was declined. I got no call, email or notification from Amex. So I call in to find out the issue. I reach some woman in (New Delhi). She didn’t understand a word I was saying and when I asked for a manager, She refused. I then asked to speak with someone in the states, She refused. The started to talk to me as though I was a child and hung up. I call back and reach a guy in (New Delhi) who then also refused to allow me to speak to a manager. He then forced me to stay on the phone while he called my bank (which I couldn’t validate was really a member of my bank). He proceeded to tell me I had no choice but to validate my account. While he was on the phone giving him access to my pin, security code, balance, address and account number. The bank representative (that the Amex Rep contact) was uncomfortable doing that and advised me not to. The Amex representative got upset like a child and hung up on the bank representative. I do business with this bank regularly and thus now effecting my relationship with said bank. Then I asked for a manager and the Amex representative refused. He then put me on hold. After fifteen minutes came back on the line I asked for a representative in the states and he again refused. After waiting on hold for thirty minutes. The representative from Amex then hung up and block/ suspended my cards out of retaliation. Mean while I am still here at the rental facility three hours later. This is the most outrageous customer experience I have ever been involved in. I have violated no policy. The Amex representative clearly was being dishonest to the point my bank advised me “not” to give them my information. When I didn’t comply with their attempt to access my personal account they retaliated. You sell the product in the states, Your clients are in the states, the address to mail a letter for resolution is in the states. But when we need to resolve any issues we have to talk to someone in (New Delhi) This is disgraceful. After four hours I finally reach someone in the states who told me to “Write a letter of complaint” to an address in Georgia. Thats is the only way to resolve the issue.

American Express is NOT what it used to be. I had my wallet stolen and am having problems getting a new account and card. After many phone calls, I finally got someone (in India) who told me I had to open a new account since I had replaced my card too many times in the 21 years I've had it and there were not enough digits left. She also said I would receive the card in 2 days via FedEx. Those days came and went, so I called again today (and of course, got someone in India.) That rep said he could not see any new account opening for me, and that no new card went out. So he promised to open that account today and send a new card overnight. Meanwhile, I checked my account online, and saw that 2 charges went through after I called to close that account. How could that be? So I called one more time, got someone in India (again), who transferred me to a "gold card specialist" in the US (thankfully). He said that my account had never been closed, no new account had been opened, and no new card had been sent. WTF?? He promised to take care of everything and said I should receive a new card tomorrow morning by 10am. I'll believe it when I see it. This company needs to overhaul their customer service department, and NOT send US customers to a phone center in India. I am very, very disappointed in Amex, and by comparison, my Citibank Preferred card was handled expeditiously and I got my new card from them 48 hours after I called. (And I did not have to go through an irritating IVR before speaking to a human.)

Deborah Newman... I feel your pain!! I just went through a similar experience about a week ago and I was told the same story (told me I had to open a new account since I had replaced my card too many times) So I totally agree with you - American Express is not the same company it used to be - they do not value their customers and lack customer service. And if you ask for a manager, forget it!! They are worse! I lost my AMEX, and I have yet to receive a new credit card. I was basically mistreated on the phone, and left in limbo. They asked me for my income, Costco membership, etc... stuff that was irrelevant to my replacement card. After giving them that info, I am still in limbo. I am highly dissappointed. I was on the phone for over an hour with a rep, then a manager. I asked them to inactivate my AMEX, and requested that they block any new charges (after my charges, of course). They had the nerves to tell me that they could not prevent any new changes from coming through... OH REALLY?!! Ridiculous! So you are left with the uncertaintly that anyone can find your new card, make charges, and get away with it. I also asked them to stop/block any automatic payments moving forward. They tell me they cannot do that... they want to make sure that fi there are any auto payment set up, they have to allow them to go through becuase they do not want me to "be late" to any of my "bills due". OH REALLY??! Since did I authorize AMEX to act as my financial manager for my other bills/accounts? They better get their act together because they have competitors - like Citibank waiting for Customoers like us - excellent credit history, loyal, payments on time, etc. AMEX, if you do not value your customers you will loose them. Your Customer Service representatives are insensitive and are definitely NOT looking out for your best interest and bottom line.

American Express has recently changed who they outsource their customer service to, as well as their customer service policies, and Amex has gone from providing superior customer service to providing horrid customer service. Whenever I disputed a charge in the past, I knew Amex always had my back and would remove the charge. The new folks handling such issues simply remove the charge and add it back at a later date "after they have completed their investigation" and provide zero reason to the customer for the rebilling. I absolutely hate Amex at this point after having multiple bad experiences with their customer service team. In the past the outfit they outsourced to was in the UK and now Amex is using an outfit in India. Absolutely horrible. I'll be using my Visa from now on... and given the amount of money I charge per month on Amex, well big mistake Amex... big mistake. I have several colleagues who've had similar experiences and canceled their Amex cards after being members for decades like me. Watch as Amex stock plummets.

Truly awful customer service and very rude when I've reached the India call center. I was finally able to get connected to a different team in the US though and had a great experience with the woman I spoke with. If you are getting terrible customer service, my advice would be to keep getting transferred until you can get to a team that is paid enough to care and is actually authorized to help you.

June, 2015: I was robbed of my purse in Bologna, Italy on May 30. Contrary to the ads by Amex of delivering new cards easily to anywhere in the world, I had the worst experience of getting a new Platinum card sent to my next destination in Sorrento. I spent hours and days on my cell phone, going way over my allotted global minutes by hundreds of dollars, trying to find out where the card was and who was responsible for its delivery. I spoke with many different Customer Service reps including supervisors, people in the Card Replacement Group and Global Assist who had no idea where the card was sent to or if it was sent at all. I was desperate because I had no ID cards, money or credit cards and had to pay for hotels, etc. However I must commend Global Assist in Phoenix for paying for my hotel bill in Bologna and a supervisor in Customer Service in Phoenix for getting a card to me at my final destination before departing for home. This whole episode took 4 weeks.

I feel and understand everyone's pain. I use to be a card holder. I always paid my bills on time. Never Never late. I use to work for the company. I even got my husband a card. When I lost my job, I was late on my macy's and visa card but always paid Amex. Macy;s and Visa reported it to my credit report. I went to use my Amex card and it declined. I called and asked why was my card declined, they said my credit report score has changed due to late payments. I told them okay, I have never been late paying you guys and asked them to look up my payment history. They did and came back and said you always pay on time. So I said, why cancel my card then. I was told they go by your credit score. What BS is that. If you are getting your money and on time, whats the problem. The only complaint I have. When I had them it was good but I can't believe they canceled my card.

I have received the worse service in my 28 years as a Gold Member with AMEX. They locked my card because we tried to buy of a $50 gift card at Best Buy. We went through a number of fraud procedures ensuring AMEX that we were the purchaser of the card. We have continually received automated calls directing us to call the fraud control center. After several attempts to stop the calls, we called Customer Service only to be routed back to the Fraud Center in India and the Philippines. The connections are very poor and the staff rude and unhelpful. The Fraud staff REFUSED to allow us to speak to Customer Service. I have spoken to seven employees/2 chat lines and asked that a manager call me back. It has been 10 days and we have not received a call back. I can't imagine card members will put up with this level of service. I know I won't!
