Thanks for making the loan process for my home purchase incredibly swift and efficient. My loan officer, Jorge, deserves esteemed remarks for being incredibly kind, understanding, and direct with all the details involved. I never had an issue reaching him, day or night. I’m very happy to put my trust into UWCU now and for my lifelong goals.

I began the process to recast my mortgage in October 2021 and have never had a worse experience in my life. I'm still having problems 3 months later. Everything must be done via phone and paper -even though my actual mortgage could be done virtually- and takes forever, while the people whose job this is make constant mistakes, give bad information or no information. I just got another error letter in the mail today, dated 1/6 (13 days mail from IL is not happening. They are taking that long to process issues), when I just spoke to someone yesterday that mentioned no new problems. I had to drive to a branch with papers they had mailed me (took 6 weeks to get them, twice, only to then mail them again, taking 15 days to be processed. No one takes responsibility, just "that's how it is" and someone else's fault. This is all happening for an existing mortgage that all they had to do was recalculate my payments because I made a very large principle only payment. Should have been incredibly easy. I'll definitely be looking for someone else to take on my mortgage, because I refuse to have such a terrible experience every time I need my mortgage serviced.

I have been with UWCU for over 41 years and I cannot say enough positive things about working with them over the years. If you have accounts at a bank, especially a national one like Wells Fargo, etc., you owe it to yourself to check out UWCU. Even when I moved to Cincinnati back in the early 90s I kept my UWCU accounts, and that was before on-line banking. With the advent of on-line banking there is no reason to ever switch from UWCU no matter where you live. The commercial with past UW athletes moving away and keeping their UWCU accounts is legit. They do not offer all the services of big banks, but I am 100% positive that for the ever expanding services they do offer they will exceed your expectations and any experience you have had at the big banks. Their mortgage and HELOC rates are very competitive. They have recently added commercial loans to their portfolio of products which I have taken advantage of. I have their 2% cash back credit card and it is the main credit card I use. Their fees are minimal and fair especially when compared to big banks, I could go on and on. If you have not checked them out you should. I have had many coworkers follow my advice and change their banking to the UWCU and all of them have been pleased with the result. I just refinanced my primary HELOC with them with a 12 month intro rate of 1.49%, for the total cost of $149. That is pretty hard to beat.

This place is dirty. Avoid it at all costs! The people will not work with you and they’re more than happy to screw anyone for an extra dollar. No grace. No mercy. No regard for their customers at all. Choose literally any other credit union or bank in Madison over this one. The people who work there are dishonest, incompetent, unprofessional, and unorganized. They will come up with any flimsy excuse for not letting one have the products and services desired. It is not an equal opportunity financial institution.

Their 1st time homebuyer discount is very shady and prey on vulnerable customers (1st time home buyers that are unfamiliar with mortgages, Lender Credits, Seller Credits etc). My complaints: 1. I have email conversation with Loan officer referring to the $1K Discount as Lender Credit so me being a vulnerable customer believed that this Discount is as good as Lender Credit. (I learned later that it is not as good because Lender has obligation to return the value of excess Lender Credit if not used to pay for Closing Costs, while the Discount is not) 2. I believe Loan officer was malicious and has intent to deceive because I inquired why I am not getting Discount about 1 week before Closing Date but he avoided the question even though he already possess enough information that I will not be getting any Discount. I still assumed good faith transaction so I believed I am getting some Discount, but it turns out I got ZERO Discount and I was robbed the time & opportunity to rectify the situation and explore my other options. 3. Up until now the Loan officer still claims that they gave me some small amount of 1st time Homebuyer Discount even though the Closing Disclosure clearly show I got ZERO. 4. There is no mention in the website link that Discount will only be applied after all Lender/Seller Credits are exhausted. At the very least it is misleading or confusing. I believe Discount should be applied first in favor of customer as their advertisement is not clear. No warning at all that too much Seller Credits or Lender Credits will risk getting lower or zero Discount.

I started with UW Credit Union when I started school at UW Madison in 2012 and now 3 cars later, a mortgage, student loan refinance, a HELOC later I still stand my them being an excellent choice. Their rates are and have always been competitive and love their app. Being a software dev myself I appreciate working software and they have it!

I've been a member of UWCU for about 15 years. Wouldn't recommend. Something has changed in the last few years. Service is poor. Maybe they have more members than they can responsibly handle or are skimping on employee training. They completely closed one of my accounts without my consent in March (for inactivity but no late payments ever), and they didn't notify me ahead of time by app, phone OR email. I had the account for 6 years. When I called today, the staff couldn't figure out that I ever had a credit account until I read them the info from CreditKarma. If an imminent account closure isn't a good enough reason to communicate with your members, I don't know what is. EDITS: UWCU used to have free transfers between external accounts, but no longer. Now when I transfer my own money, they charge me for it ($3 per transfer, I think). They also made a change to the terms of accounts requiring arbitration (this means the require members to waive some legal rights). Both of these are normal for greedy banks, but unethical and highly unusual for a credit union. Probably use a different credit union.

      Response from the owner

Hi Becca, thank you for writing in. Like all businesses, UWCU experienced significantly higher call volume during the pandemic. We responded to this volume by expanding our team, so it is possible you spoke to someone recently who is newer in their tenure. If you have more details about the particular interactions you describe, please give us a call to share your feedback or send us a secure message in Web Branch. Regarding your credit card: credit cards with no activity in the past 14 months are considered dormant and will be closed automatically by the expiration date on the card. A notice is sent 120 days prior to expiration date telling members to use the card in next 30 days to avoid the card closure at expiration. Is it possible you missed our communications? Edit 4/4/22: Hi Rebekah, the ACH withdrawal rule was made to help ensure that our credit union remains financially strong. As ACH processing costs have increased, we wanted to balance the account benefits in favor of those members who use our payment services over another ACH payment service. We always strive to provide convenience and fairness for our entire membership. Regarding your concern about arbitration, we have a Q&A here with answers to several common questions: https://www.uwcu.org/news/members/membership-changes/ If you have additional comments, we encourage you to reach out to [email protected].

They have some of the most unfriendly staff I have ever encountered with a financial institution. New trainings need to be implemented for claim specialist , because the costumer service is awful. The costumers are the reason the employees receive a paycheck and how the company thrives , yet little compassion and care is shown by the staff towards consumers.
