Berith Hogan1I have been using this bank my entire life. Something has changed in the last year, and the small bank charm is wearing thin. First they put a extended hold on a larger check (after I declined to sign the paperwork giving them permission to do so) because our business account had a negative balance within the last three months (the check wasn’t even that large, $8000 - not abnormal for our biz account, also not abnormal for or biz account to occasionally dip in the negative if enough people don’t pay promptly - it’s become more and more infrequent but when you start a biz with zero $ it happens). The implication here is that I’m committing check fraud - no other way to see it. Then they started making me specify after at least three years of my weekly checks to myself (from biz checking to regular checking, the way I pay ourselves because you can’t transfer from biz to regular checking) that I want the payment avail. for immediate draw. Instead of clearing it automatically as they do with every other in-house check, you need to ask them to do so. Again the implication is attempted check fraud, after years of no hiccups I’m suddenly trying to steal from them. Today I had to call to unfreeze my debit card (after it was declined at two stores even though there was money in the account). Turns out a debit was attempted for my daughter’s soccer club unbeknownst to me, and even though I transferred money into the account afterwards (without knowing about the declined debit) my card was frozen because my debit card isn’t enrolled in overdraft protection. So they freeze the account? How about just decline the payment? They said it was for security reasons, which makes no-sense. There is no heightened security trigger for a small declined payment (one that’s is RECURRING with my checking account). It’s about shaming people. It’s about getting embarrassed at stores, embarrassed on the phone when you have to unfreeze your card. I looked up my overdraft fees with regular checking over the last two years - over $1100! That’s what this is about! They could just decline the payment, but no. They pretend it’s a security issue to embarrass you so you sign up for overdraft protection (apparently I signed up for checking overdraft protection but not debit card protection when I opened this account some 15 years ago). I have actually never had more money in my adult life than I do now. Not rich my any means, but can finally afford to live. I am acutely aware and sensitive to how financial institutions treat people regarding there worth - it’s just funny to me that NOW of all times (when I’m not poor anymore) is when my bank starts accusing me of theft (yes, that’s what all of their extended holds and asking permission to clear my own money ultimately are) and trying to milk me for me more overdraft charges or risk humiliation of getting declined in stores from frozen accounts because of a silly forgotten, recurring soccer payment. Some of their tellers are super nice though.
Response from the ownerDear Ms. Hogan, thank you for sharing your feedback, we truly appreciate you choosing HVB and strive to consistently offer our customers a superior banking experience. We are truly sorry to hear that we recently fell short of your expectations and have performed a thorough review of the transactions you described. We have and will continue to attempt to contact you directly rather than via Google however we felt it was prudent to formally respond to this review as well. With regard to your question about the hold, the Bank did follow proper protocol as per Regulation CC Large Dollar Exception Holds for check deposits of $5000 or more. Given the circumstances around the deposit, implementing the hold was not an implication of anything other than taking appropriate precautions to ensure both you and the bank remain protected. This information was provided to you at the time of the transaction as mentioned in your comment. With regard to the ‘On-Us’ check, as per our Funds Availability Policy ‘On-Us’ checks are normally made available next day. As a customer courtesy, we made it immediately available to you as per your request. One of our top priorities is to keep customer’s accounts secure, it is never intended to ‘shame’ anyone. Debit card fraud continues to increase nationwide therefore we are compelled to implement appropriate security measures to protect our customer’s accounts. The repetitive overdrafts you described triggered an automated fraud alert which froze your card. This was rectified once sufficient funds were placed in the account. We take extreme pride in providing the very best customer experience while also ensuring that our customer’s accounts remain secure. We invite you to contact us at 215-947-1300, so we may discuss your specific experience in more detail.

Frank John Synnestvedt5I've been using this bank in some form essentially my whole life, from the passbook savings account my mom set up for me as a little kid, to using it for a checking account when I grew up, to now having savings accounts for my kids. This bank provides everything I expect from a bank, and adds a dash of small town charm on top of it. I highly recommend this bank, particularly the HV location. Friendly smiles, knowing nods, and kind words always accompany the great service I get!

Joseph McCabe1this bank is operating like it’s 1950 if they detect fraud on your credit card they shut off your card and leave it in active over the entire weekend with nothing you can do about it they tell you that your checks are available immediately and then they are not in there constantly bait and switching with their policies . They need to invest in their infrastructure and technology and not renovate their buildings most of their employees are not informed and they have to call the back office for everything
