Exie Brewington5I've been banking here for quite some time. This review isnt based on one meeting or interaction. The bankers and customer service reps here do a great job and have always left me a satisfied customer. The are fair and ethical. I would highly recommend. No banking errors in a lot of years with a lot of transactions. :)

Robert Shaw1It's really hard to find a Bank this bad, most banks have at least one good quality, but I didn't find it. If you are self employed this bank takes away your legal deductions and says you did not earn the money. First Merchants Bank thinks their underwriter is the smartest person in the world, so Mr Underwriter read this; Ok lets look at the Federal code: 26 U.S. Code § 7206. Fraud and false statements Any person who— (1) Declaration under penalties of perjury Willfully makes and subscribes any return, statement, or other document, which contains or is verified by a written declaration that it is made under the penalties of perjury, and which he does not believe to be true and correct as to every material matter; or Receives, withholds, destroys, mutilates, or falsifies any book, document, or record, or makes any false statement, relating to the estate or financial condition of the taxpayer or other person liable in respect of the tax; shall be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not more than $100,000 ($500,000 in the case of a corporation), or imprisoned not more than 3 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution Update 7/31/2020. Thank you for your response, I believe the best thing your bank can do in the future is to tell the customer in FULL Disclosure that a Home loan application includes a hit on their credit report, and your bank subtracts tax deductions as no income for self employed people. That would resolve a lot of disappointment for a lot of people, just be up front and honest in advance. Yes I called your Vice President four times, I guess that chatter was nothing but bull because no one said they knew what this was about.
Response from the ownerRobert - Thank you for contacting First Merchants Bank, We apologize for your experience at our New Castle Banking Center location and would like to have our Vice President, Personal Banking Market Leader contact you personally about your experience. Angela Wiggs2First, let me say the tellers and CSRs are great. The Indianapolis office is great. I would give them 4-5 stars. However service and professionalism take a backseat when you get to the banking center manager, Sharon Herbert. Not only are you made to feel like you have interrupted something very important, there are no handshakes, hellos or even the use of proper grammar. She had to call in another officer to explain the closing paperwork to her! Our meeting was interrupted by her personal cell phone ringing . She can not coherently explain loan paperwork and any criticism is taken quite personally. Finally after we both insisted Ms. Herbert got the Indianapolis office on the phone and our questions were answered. Do yourself and your blood pressure a favor and avoid Sharon Herbert!

James Ward1First Merchant Bank continues to be an incompetent bank. We try and do business with this bank only to get no calls back. It takes days/ weeks to get anything done. They are slow, you get bumped around to different people, they act like they are the customer and that you need them. They have this bizarre sense of what customer service is. With the purchase of Ameriana Bank things have only gotten worse. As we transition to Indiana we need certain resources. This bank will not be one at the rate they are going. Never have I ever experience such poor banking. JW

Ciesbe1Okay as the other reviews say... this bank is absolutely horrible. You cannot call directly to YOUR BANK... have to call the 'MAIN INDY BRANCH' and answer 300 security questions to ask any questions regarding your account. They have ZERO ATM locations other than the ONE that is at the actual bank... on top of the ATM fee FMB also throws in a $2 'foreign atm fee' so that makes it $24.50 to withdraw $20... I signed up for Overdraft Protection as i've been on this since i was 16.. well I can still overdraft and owe them money. Not sure how that works. Customer service is a big fail and their fraud dept is also a big fail... I would not recommend this bank to anyone.

aubrey conwell18 dollar overdraft fees, mobile bank updates and crashes, mobile deposit doesnt work half the time, you cant see your actual bank balance on weekends if you deposit money get a check for friday and work weekends late shift? gotta come in early to use the bank no atm's and if you use a foreign atm you get charged a fee.

Log Log2No modern features on debit card i.e. usage alerts/etc - can only notify of deposits/etc ATM always seems to be out of service - at least every time I need to use it. Not a community bank - just another wannabe "big corporate" positioning itself to be bought out by one of the big 3-4 nationals.

Stephen Wood1The service is... rough to say the least. They don't seem to really care about what you have to say or about the service they provide. Most of the employees here have the attitude of you're bothering them. The online banking and the app seem to always have issues as well. Very frustrated with this bank. I'd suggest switching to Chase.

LaDonna Booher1The most absolute WORST BANK !!!!They are crooks! NEVER DO YOUR MORTGAGE THROUGH THEM!!!!! All you get is lies and no one ever knows what's really going on! Most unethical bank I've ever had to deal with, and no to mention very unprofessional staff!
