      Looking to loan my wedding rings to pay my gas and electric bill, I took a two year old, $1,000 wedding band set in and was offered $40 . No way! What a joke!

To address your complaints, pawn shops make loans based on the market-value of the collateral being pledged. Speaking of the cost of gold a ring is typically a pennyweight or two. A troy ounce of pure gold is around $1000 currently. There are 20 pennyweights in a troy ounce, not to be confused with an "ounce". Most rings are not pure gold bringing the value down even more. I have pulled some other resources for you to understand how jewelry is priced: "On average, retailers markup their diamonds 50-200% and gold 100-400% from wholesale costs. Why? because of their overhead is so great. These include security and theft prevention costs, property leasing expenses, sales staff salaries and much more.
