Big Morongo Canyon is a nature preserve just north of Palm Springs that is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It protects an area of great biological diversity where the Mojave and Sonoran deserts meet. The canyon itself is lush and green, in contrast to the desert mountains surrounding the canyon. The preserve is open during daylight hours and has about 10 miles of hiking trails. To protect the unique wildlife, dogs are prohibited. We stopped to do a short hike here on the way to Joshua Tree. The wildflowers were really blooming and the canyon was just beautiful. Would definitely like to explore the canyon more if visiting the area again.

Great place to bring the family for nature hikes. Boardwalk paths and various hiking trails with nice resting benches. Wheelchair accessible on boardwalk path. Educational of various plants and animals within the preserve. We saw families of deer in the meadows. The young deers playing in the meadows as the parents kept watchful eyes on their young. We saw a large buck, just off the boardwalk path, eating vegetation. Sited various bird species throughout the preserve. Beautiful views from the top of the hills. Picnic area just off the parking lot. Handicap parking and handicap restrooms available. We couldn't visit the educational center, we arrived after hours. Educational center hours are 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Nice public park close by (within walking distance).

Such a wonderful place to be if you enjoy wildlife and landscapes. "Trail designs" should be another 5 stars.

They really should think about building ground pavement street for cars that are not 4x4 or trucks. To visit family living in those mountains is beautiful but the dirt road is awful.

We hiked about three and a half miles out along Canyon Trail - and then back the way we came. A really fantastic hike - we only saw two other groups the whole time we were out there. The path is mainly a sandy road/trail running alongside what would in the Spring presumably be a river or stream. Saw quite a few birds - and three deer right at the end from the parking lot - but the main thing was how blissfully isolated we felt out on the trail. I could do it again tomorrow...

This is a very beautiful place. There are a number of good washes with cottonwood trees and other vegetation. There are a few Hills up and down but a very nice walk. I stopped on my way driving from Phoenix to San Francisco, and got in an hour run.

Only drove through this canyon on the way to Joshua Tree. It's a short drive through with nice scenic views. Although, maintain the speed limit... Law enforcement patrols are plentiful! And be nice and courteous to your fellow drivers.

It's a great nature walk with wetlands, hills, valleys and canyons. It's like a microcosm of the desert. Located at the edge of the Mojave, this Oasis is teaming with life. You'll be able to spot many birds and other wildlife. You will also be able to identify them thanks to a guide and life size portraits of the birds at the gate to the preserve. The place is well maintained and pleasant. There are many different trails to take. Difficulty level is easy, but there's plenty to see. Beware of bees. Dogs not allowed. Take nothing, leave nothing behind.
