What is Alaska Housing Rent Relief? Provides qualified Alaskans up to 12 MONTHS OF RENT and assistance with utilities. I have received 9 months of rent/utility assistance. However, my application is marked complete, when I should have 3 more months remaining. Turns out that this is because they count your electric and rent separately toward total months of assistance. I have spoken with Jennifer from valley charities and Sarah, a supervisor in the call center, they advised that i must do an appeal to get this fixed. I have spent the last hour looking on your website, your blogs, your quarterly reports, and i am unable to find anything that says if you ask for help with utilities that you are penalized and that is counted toward your months of rental assistance. No one in their right mind would ask you to pay their electric bill in lieu of a month of rent. IF your formula was correct, then I would have been given 18 months of assistance. When I spoke with my rent relief specialist, Terry Beverly, he did not state, "hey are you sure you want help with your electricity bill, because if you do, we will count that against your months of rent." Your call center said that I am not allowed to pay back electricity so i can have my 3 months of rent assistance instead. I filed the appeal today, but, i heard from your call center that this is a very very common complaint, and if that is true than maybe it should be posted somewhere on your website...it is NOT in the fine print anywhere either, i asked the call center for a copy of this policy they said they do not have it because they are just the call center and only an appeal will get me my answers...now I'm waiting.

Edited June 9th: Thank you for all that you do for Alaskans in need! When this process actually starts, my family can be together again and all under the same roof. Thats why this waiting period is hard, its too long with no answers, things get cut off or people get kicked out during the process. I called last month to tell them my electric company would accept a promise to pay by email or phone and the representative stated they dont do that but knew nothing else. It was heart breaking. Been calling and checking since and no news until I wrote this review but still no new emails to get the actual process started and there is nothing in my spam folder. Initial reveiw: The application process was not that bad but the waiting time is. Since April 2022 my electric has been turned off and when I call to find out the status no one ever knows anything.

Cannot talk to case manager so I've already had to go to eviction court. I have 30 days to come up with a lot more money, or move. I've had to repeatedly send in documents but it's so hard to find out what they are questioning on the documents. I just got another request for info on where I live and who my landlord is. Why do I have to send this in 4 times while I'm in the process of getting evicted because I'm behind on rent? It makes no sense we all are suppose to have case managers but we can't know who they are or talk to them. What are they there for?

      Response from the owner

Hi Bess — please call us at 1-844-330-829 to contact us directly about the Rent Relief program, and your case. I applied and was approved over three months ago. My landlords kept part of my deposit bc rent relief never came through and it set me back for months. These programs were funded with millions of dollars and they’re delaying the release of the funds to keep the people they’ve employed with money in their pockets while the rest of us suffer.

      Response from the owner

Hi Brooke, if you're still having problems, please call us directly at 1-844-330-8290 so we can help. Alaska is among the top 5 states in U.S. to get money out to landlords, and we are doing everything we can to ensure payments are made as quickly as possible.

Applied for the rental assistance the day it was available. Been waiting nearly five months and not a word back.. I’m packing my stuff because I’m being evicted at the end of the month. Thanks a lot ahfc for saying one thing and not doing something completely different. While you’re busy paying my landlord money down the road, my apartment will be rented to somebody else, I’ll be on the street, which makes you simply giving money to somebody for no reason after that. You outdid yourself this time.

      Response from the owner

Hi there, we are so sorry to hear about your situation, and are doing everything we can to distribute rental assistance quickly. All applicants have been processed and have received further instruction — it sounds like our emails may have gone to a spam filter. If you're still struggling, please call us at 1-844-330-8290, and we will help you get the relief you need.

My son is disabled and recently had his house burn down where he had been living. We went to Alaska housing for help , they put him on a list and told us he could be on it for up to a year or more. The staff at the front desk were rude and impatient with our questions , we left there in shock and I felt like crying . I'm sure these people deal with desperate people all the time and they have become cold to people in need and reaching out for solutions .

      Response from the owner

Hi Nicole, we are always working to improve our programs, and to assist as many people as possible. It sounds like you certainly did not receive the standard of service we always expect of our staff. We know we're a little late seeing this — but if you still need assistance now, or in the future, please reach out to us at 907-338-6100. Serving the community is our priority, and we want to ensure everyone receives the help they need.
