Chad Kemp1Buyer Beware!!! On December 23, 2020, my wife and I purchased a diamond ring. The ring was purchased for $1,391.00. The very next day two side baguettes diamonds fell out of the ring. We called them immediately and left a message- unfortunately it was Christmas Eve when the stones fell off so we were unable to reach them for a few days. We finally reached a woman there named Dawn on Dec 28th. We asked to speak to the owner and her response was “I have been here for 30 years and I am the best you are going to get”. That was the first indication things were not looking good for us. She told us we could take our ring to a jeweler and see what they say. We decided to take our ring to one of our reputable jewelers here in Charleston as we do not live in Hilton Head. Our Jeweler did an examination on the ring and informed us that the ring was sold as damaged which is the reason the stones fell out. They provided us a breakdown of the issues - the shank was cracked and the channel wall holding the baguettes near the center stone was completely worn. They also stated the ring was previously worked by another jeweler who did not know what they were doing. Previous jeweler used a graver tool to tighten the stones instead of building the wall up with more gold to repair the shank which is the reason the stones fell out. The jeweler stated that any reputable place of business that sells jewelry would have known this ring was damaged. Our Jeweler quoted us a price of $494.30 to get it fixed. Given my wife likes the ring and the fact that we don’t live in Hilton Head, we decided to get it fixed and try to get some money back for the repairs. We thought it would be fair if Top Dollar Pawn would reimburse just $250.00. We emailed the owner of all pictures and write-up from our Jeweler. The owner called us back and was extremely rude and defensive from the start. I could barely get a word in. He said we could mail the ring back to him but he would not work with us at ALL on coming to a compromise. As a business man myself, I could not understand why an owner would be unwilling to come to an agreement given the condition of the ring and the fact we live out of town. I also would not want to mail a $1,400 ring back to a Pawnshop without have any assurance I would receive all my money back. I said to him $250.00 is reasonable given there are two diamond baguettes that have to be replaced and the shank has to be repaired. He responded that his jeweler could fix it for $100.00. He also responded with “I should go to a Jewelry store next time I buy something”. Unfortunately the owner would not work with us. After I spoke with the owner, I called my jeweler and they said there is no possible way it would cost $100 to fix it correctly with new baguettes. and would be willing to speak to the owner if necessary. Given the demeanor of the owner on the phone, I highly doubt he would be willing to speak to anyone. All of this gives me concern on Top Dollar Pawn’s moral principles when selling merchandise and dealing with customers on a legitimate claim. We have elevated this issue to the Better Business Bureau. Please be careful when dealing with this pawn shop.
Response from the ownerMr. Kemp, I’m disappointed you gave us such a negative review. In my response to your wife’s email, I apologized for her not being happy with the ring. In trying to resolve the situation, I offered to give you a FULL REFUND or have my jeweler repair the ring at my expense including shipping back and forth. I believe this is more than fair for the situation and I was shocked that this was not acceptable to you. Remember this is second hand and the cost is at a fraction of the cost it would be in a jewelry store. As you both have said, you have made purchases from us several times thru the years. Your wife asked for a loop and inspected the ring herself. If she saw any imperfections at the time, she didn’t mention it. My employees are not bench jewelers and don’t claim to be. Top Dollar is a pawn shop and items are preowned. We stand behind what we sell as we have done in this instance. As for you and your jewelers claims that I could not get the ring repaired for considerably less than his estimate you are both wrong. Top Dollar has been in business for over 30 years and we have a very reputable and very fair wholesale bench jeweler that does our repairs. Dawn is the Manager of the Hilton Head store. When you called after Christmas and told her that the ring was already at your jeweler she told you “My boss will not pay for your retail fees to have the ring fixed.” Dawn never said “Im the best your going to get”. Your wife told her she would get in touch with me after the holiday which she did by email. As for my demeanor, I would say after being accused of selling you something intentionally defective , attacking my integrity and continuing to demand I pay you money or you would leave a bad review , my response was emotional but fair. I feel I gave you more than acceptable choices. I do not believe I deserved a negative review because you chose to have the ring repaired against my employees advice and without speaking to me first. M T2I have never gone to a pawn shop and was looked at in the most racist stereotype ever. I go into the store with my digital camera that take your own batteries and memory card now yes some do come with one but I would buy my own and use it so why would i have to give my memory card with the camera that i am going to pawn. i have gone to this place before and i guess some other people was in there cause the guy I dealt with last time was cool and know what was going on. After the lady tried to tell me something she goes right behind her to the computer to find it out for herself

Travis Hunter1I stopped in to look at TV's a few weeks ago and was shock3d at how expensive there selection of 2 TV'S was. I then noticed a red keurig 2.0 coffee maker out of the corner of my eye. I saw the tag of $80, knowing I could get the same one brand new for just a few dollars more. So I talked the extremely unfriendly guy down to $60. He told me to keep my receipt just in case it breaks, I could return it. So I may have made 10 cups of coffee, when it completely explodes, shooting scalding hot water everywhere. I had to unplug it to get it to stop. So as most people I have a very busy schedule, so I used my old Keurig until I had my next day off and brought it back. So I went back to the store with the machine and my reciept and was just informed that I'm S.O.L . because I "didn't call that exact second it broke and return it that day" I'm stuck with it and out $60. I should've just purchased a brand new one. But the moral of this story is this place must be pretty hard up for business if they can't even refund a measly $60 Sale and keep a regular customer coming back. As a small business owner myself, I've refunded thousands just to keep a customer happy. This place gets a negative -5 * review if Google would allow negative stars this poor excuse for a pawn shop would get it. Nice job guys!
Response from the ownerWe're very sorry about this incident with your Keurig, Travis. That said, we have a return and refund policy and do our best to stand by that. We know this happened more than a year ago, so we're not exactly sure when your item's warranty ran out with us. We do our best to accommodate all of our customers, but we must be fair to everyone with our policies. All the best. -Ray Clark

Jordan1This place is a joke. The people working behind the counter are rude and unhelpful. They refuse to take any electronic device that isn't the newest model (sorry to everyone that goes to pawn shops looking for vintage gaming systems or games.) They advertise "sporting equipment" on both the website, and also I believe in the front window of the store, but the only thing you'll find is golf clubs. We also brought in a signed football by a current NFL coach, and they wouldn't even move out of their seats to see that what it was worth. Not to mention, the musical instruments are ridiculously overpriced. (I'm talking a scratched up, clearly used, Taylor guitar for $600.) Don't give them your business or try to bring in your items. because you'll leave the store with all your stuff, and a headache.
Response from the ownerJordan, I know you left this review a while ago, but I'm sorry to hear you didn't have a better experience at our store. Unfortunately, we can't accept all items that are brought to us. We do believe, however, that our items are reasonably priced and that our selection is impressive. Thanks for stopping by -- I appreciate your feedback and hope you'll consider giving our shop another shot. -Ray Clark

Jessica Brickley5The employees are very helpful, I like to look at and ask prices on many things and the man and woman we're so helpful and knowledgeable. I ended up finding an amazing right hand ring and I've worked at jewelry stores and this was a crazy deal. AND THEY EVEN DO 3 MONTH'S LAYWAY which helped me out. Definently a MUST go to.
Response from the ownerWe love having you in our store and answering all of your questions, Jessica -- glad we could help! I know it's been a while since you left this review, but I'm glad to finally be reading it. I hope your ring is still holding up well. Stop by again if you need anything else. -Ray Clark
