Gold Star Pawn & Gun Shop Reviews

Brooklyn Lynn1Went in with a solid 18k bracelet weighing 9.3 dwt with a minimum melt value of 467.00$ thinking I would get a fair price, the lady snatched it out of my hands, threw it on the scale and rudely asked what I wanted for it and abruptly offered me 200$. I told her that was less than half expecting her to at least offer me something better and instead she glared at me nasty and said, " I can't help you". I walked out completely in shock over how rude she was. Believe it or not this has a good ending bc I then decided to Google other places in the area just to see if I would get offered the same and I found a downtown Willoughby business that buys and sells by appt only and the guy was super nice over the phone and got me in right away and offered me 400$ and was SUPER professional! My advice is SHOP AROUND before going here! There is much much better places where u won't get this kind of trash customer service. I hope if this "Gold Star Pawn" made any money today they went out and bought themselves a professional personality!
Response from the ownerThe only part of the story that is true is that he came in with a 18K bracelet and he wanted a lot of money for it. She did not "snatch" the bracelet or "throw it on the scale." (we always treat items with respect because you never know when they will be ours). He handed it to her and she placed in on the scale. He wanted melt value on the bracelet. She told him she could make an offer but she didn't want to insult him. He actually said, "you won't insult me." Apparently that is not true. She was very polite throughout the whole conversation and made him an offer on a loan. He refused. She said, "Sorry I couldn't help you. Thanks for coming in." And he left. There was no rudeness or animosity on either side. It was a very pleasant interaction. I saw the whole thing. I honestly don't know why he left such a negative review.

HectorHefner Finesse1Took my girlfriend in to look at their selection of firearms for her birthday . When i walked away he Old Man kept asking my girlfriend if i was trying to have her purchase a gun for me , little does he know im a licensed ccw carier and i can purchase my own firearm same day . When i walked away they tried to take her money as if she was purchasing gun same day without mentioning the background check or paperwork . Luckily i was with her to stop them from tricking her . Pawn shop has nice selection , but terrible and shady staff . Be careful
Response from the ownerWe always make sure that people are buying guns for themselves, and not completing illegal straw sales. It is the responsible, conscientious way to conduct business. We ask to our satisfaction, not yours. Again- responsible. This is standard practice for ALL licensed, reputable firearms dealers. Additionally, background checks are not just a good idea, but also the law. We don't do background checks without the purchase of a firearm and we are very upfront with that, we don't hide it from anyone. Again, it's the law. If being reputable and honest deserves one star, then I'll take it.

MattricK StaR1Worst of them all. Couldn't get there because of my work hours and don't have anyone in the area to pick up items I had loans on. I finally managed to get to the shop 9 minutes before they're set to close and as im pulling in the owner is getting into his Lexus; looks at me shrugs and drives away. Everybody around here hates them for a reason. Good luck getting your stuff back. I know everyone I know stopped using them all together. What a waste.
Response from the ownerWe open at 10:00 Monday - Saturday and close at 6:00 M-F, 4:00 on Saturday. We never stay open late. We never close early. There are other options for picking up merchandise, including having someone else pick it up. And the owner doesn't drive a Lexus, I drive a GMC.

Sam Klozar1Was in today (4/29) went in with tools to sell, the woman was very unpleasant said our items were "worth nothing" & then broke a zipper on the tool case so now it doesn't close right. She wouldn't fix it even though it was closed and worked when we brought it in. Never coming back such poor customer service, even for a pawn shop.
Response from the ownerI check all recodings to see what actually happened when I see these reviews. So let's first address the zipper. She did not break your zipper. She opened then closed your zipper. In the process of opening and closing a zipper in the normal way, your zipper broke. Unfortunately zippers do break and this one just happened to do it in my store. Had you not brought it in, it probably would have broken the next time you opened and closed the zipper. As far as her being unpleasant, again, the recording tells a different story. She never said that your items were "worth nothing." "Worth" is a subjective term and we never assume the value a customer places on their merchandise. She did politely told you that were were not interested in them. You clearly were not happy with this response judging by your reaction and this review. I'm not saying that we are perfect nor that there isn't room for improvement. What I am saying is that, as unfortuate as it may be, we don't want to buy everything that comes in to the store. This may be an inconvenience for some customers and it is unfortunate, but that's business, and I wouldn't be in it very long if I bought things I couldn't resell.

Tin Man1Very rude and crooked business.!! The lady there was very mean and heartless. I had borrowed money on a item that was in my family for over a hundred years and I was a little late picking it up they never mailed me anything saying I was about to lose my item or nothing and I was not even that late and when I asked if I can just buy it back from the pawn shop she told me in a mean rude way you lose its allready sold and when I said to her that's imposible you sold it that fast that I was not even that late and she said your late though to bad it's gone and I borrowed way less then what the item was worth and never had it appraised so im thinking they did and found they had something worth a lot of money that's why they lied to me saying it was allready sold and that was just wrong of them I even pleaded with the old man because he himself was acting shady like he new they still had the item but she was not giving it up and I have talked to other People in lake county about it and herd nothing about bad shady business deals that happens at this pawn shop I hope they all have bad karma there because what they did was wrong and she new I was upset to where I almost cried because it had sentimental value to my family and she did not even care it was all about her just doubleing her money for the pawn shop when it came down to it and was mean and did not care about me and was just like to bad you shouldent of been late instead of calming me down and saying something like sorry you lost your item but no her and the old man was just plain rude and plain out lied they still had it and new it was worth a lot of money and it was just all about ripping off the customer there and not keeping you happy just all about putting more money in there pockets. I would not recomend any one to deal with this shady crooked pawn shop, the worst pawn shop in lake county..!!!
Response from the ownerI don’t think this review is for our business. We don’t have an “old man.” The oldest person working at this shop just turned 51 last week. Also, they said the item was in their family for over 100 years. We don't deal in antiques. Additionally, I talked to all employees about this and it does not sound familiar. Besides, this review is more of a reflection of their behavior rather than the behavior of the pawn shop. I would like to explain some things about pawn shops, though: First and foremost, this is a business. This is not a charity, a government organization, therapy or a hobby. We do this to make money. A pawn shop will NEVER give you what your item is worth. If we did, there would be no incentive for you to come back. Also when we would go to sell it we would not make any money. This brings us to my next point. Pawn shops do not want to keep your stuff. We have too much stuff as it is. We want you to come back for your stuff. Stuff that you don’t come back for has to be sold and that costs time and money. We have to have a showroom, pay staff, pay eBay fees, ship, wait for things to sell, haggle and maybe never sell it. We want to make loans. Making loans is our business. Selling stuff is a necessary by-product. If we still have your stuff we are always willing to work with you to get it back to you because we don’t want your stuff. If you don’t come back for your stuff we have to sell it. If we didn’t we would not have any money to lend to other people to make more money to lend to more people. Next, you have to keep track of your business. We keep track of ours. We do everything prescribed by law PLUS MORE to encourage you to come back for your stuff. If it is that important to you, then make your payments on time. If you are late it is not our fault. We cannot take responsibility for your actions. We cannot make you come back on time. We can only wait so long. In fact, the law states we must give people a total of three months to come back for their stuff. We give 4. Why? Because we don’t want to keep your stuff. Finally, we deal in real, not sentimental value. It is an unfortunate part of the job, but sometimes we must take people’s stuff and sell it when they fail to return for whatever reason. We don’t like doing it. We aren’t sitting behind the counter rolling our mustache between our fingers plotting how to take your stuff. We do it because you didn’t pay us back. We lend people money. They know the terms (we explain them with every new customer) and decide whether their stuff is important enough to come back for. We don’t make that decision. If we did make that decision, everybody would come back because we don’t want to keep your stuff.

Raymond Fogliano5I have been using Gold Star since they opened. The owner has become a friend over the years in the respect that on a couple of occasions I could have lost a pawn due to illness and missing a pawn redemption date they carried me till I made good. I highly recommend them. Especially for guns.
Response from the ownerThanks Ray. We appreciate your business.

Jdee1I am rattled by how RUDE the woman working there is. She would not let me finish my sentences and was just down right a terrible person. I may look young, but I have been collecting coins for over 20 years. She spoke to me as if I was slow or mentally handicapped. I graduated high school at 16 and had my bachelor's degree before I could even purchase alcohol. She basically went off on a tangent saying they melt all the coins blah blah blah and my Carson City Morgan silver dollar was worth less than $14 and had no nusimatic value. It was a NGC graded GSA Morgan silver dollar, lol. Type that into Google and if you can find one for less than $100, I will buy it for you. Do yourself a favor and go to ANY other place to sell your stuff, as the staff here are a bunch of clowns. I still would not go to this place even if they offered me top dollar for my stuff simply because of the fact that the staff lack basic human interaction skills. And to the lady who could not simply make me an OFFER when I repeatedly asked her to just MAKE ME AN OFFER, I have a feeling that karma is going to catch up to you and you guys will not be in business much longer.
Response from the ownerWe never said we melt all coins. In fact we NEVER melt coins. We also never said a Carson City Morgan was worth $14. He did not have the coin with him and didn't know even what year it was, so we couldn't even begin to value it. Additionally, he wanted $300 for 7 silver 1 ounce rounds. We simply said we didn't want to insult him with an offer because we were not going to pay anywhere near $300 with silver at less than $14/ounce.
