Outer Banks West / Currituck Sound KOA Holiday Reviews

Kathy Buckmaster3Our stay was 7/25-29 on a waterfront deluxe site, which are EXTREMELY close together with your "yard" behind your camper to take full advantage of the view (which is SPECTACULAR). But there is no privacy. Could not put our dogs on standard 6ft leads to be out with us or they would easily get onto the next site. No public path to the sound for use of campers on interior sites. They must walk right through already tight waterfront sites. Water pressure fluctuates from fair to poor. No beach area. There are piers to jump off of. Tough if you have small children. BRING FLOATS. Website photos are misleading - several are not of this campground (for example, there are no concrete pads with deluxe sites as in other KOAs). For a 4 night stay we paid 3 different prices per night + a $4.99 resort amenity fee per night - instead of a set price for season & site type. On the positive side...this is an absolutely beautiful location. It is generally clean & well maintained. It is a newer KOA & they are adding & improving some features. All electric & water hookups are new. The deluxe sites have a very nice raised wooden patio with great table, chairs, & glider. We put our beach umbrella in the table for extra shade. Nice dog park with double gated entrance. Fortunately for us, campers around us left on our 2nd day, which made our stay MUCH more pleasant., allowing us to truly enjoy the beauty of the Sound.
Response from the ownerKathy, we love your picture! What a beautiful veiw you had! We hope you come back, soon!

Sue Beck4Campground has a lot of construction going on still and will be amazing when it's completed. Staff is very helpful and accommodating. Magnificent waterfront. Cabins are very comfortable and the screened porch is a great place to relax, eat dinner and enjoy the breeze. Will definitely be back. Probably won't recognize the place next Summer!
Response from the ownerThank you, so much! We appreciate that you shared all the good things about Outer Banks West KOA.

Jeffrey Wynn5We stayed five nights. Very well cared for and clean. Lots of activities for kids. Really a beautiful location with trails, swimming, fishing ponds, launch ramps. Not a lot of shade so bring a canopy.
Response from the ownerThank you for staying with us! We are glad you enjoyed your time at Outer Banks West KOA. A canopy is definitely a great tip!

Julie Scott3Incredible views, wonderful location, it was opening weekend and once everything is finished it will be a super nice campground. My one disappointment the sites were simply to close together. I felt bad for my neighbor whose picnic table was next to the waste drop for our camper. Both of our neighbors felt the same way about the sites being so small. We could go off the back of our site and use that space for our fire ring which the majority of others along the back road did the same. Dog Park, playground, store, but small bath house.
Response from the ownerThank you for your feedback! We hope you come back to see us and as our campground blossoms. We have a second and larger bathhouse in the event center. Thank you for letting us know so we can post signs!

D Lee3First let me say this is going to be a great campground. But here’s some things you should know going in. There are some great people working here. Very friendly and very helpful. However all sites are not created equal even in the same price range. There’s waterfront and then there’s waterfront behind the marsh. These should not be charged the same price. The marsh side doesn’t have direct water access and they are definitely smaller sites and more cramped. On the map we paid to be in the waterfront blue sites and we’re put in the red seasonal site and told they had changed the maps and just not had them reprinted. (Really? They just opened this weekend.). Our site was behind trees and bushes and no clear view to the water. There were two holes on our site (68) that could break an ankle. Credit to the staff who allowed us to move after two days to site 26 and it was fantastic. As big an issue for us was water pressure. It was pretty much non existent in both sites. WiFi as well didn’t really work well for streaming. We ended up using the hotspot from our phones and that worked better. Wouldn’t have been an issue but the weather was awful. We would come again but would want to be site specific and given that we are a couple with no kids along would never come again on a holiday weekend. It’s early days for this campground taken over by KOA and being expanded. Lots of work still to do as it’s mostly dirt and still being developed. But will be a great place for families with kids. Greg Bell5Beautiful facility. Spacious sites. Friendly and helpful staff. The midges are a problem. Apparently they don't come around every season but they are there now. We cut our trip short due to the bugs but we will definitely find another time to come back to this Campground.
Response from the ownerThank you! We are glad you enjoyed your trip (aside from the bugs) and you will be back!

Shannon Smith3My family spent the Memorial Day weekend at this new campground and I'll start by saying that once it is complete, it will be very nice. BUT, know that many of the sites are very close and if you have a long rig, getting in and out is TIGHT. We stayed in the deluxe waterfront with patio site and first, the patio is in the back. This does make sense because of the view but it was not disclosed on the KOA site and it did not make sense for my toy hauler which we had to unload before we parked and load after we pulled out and around. Also the site they put us on was so tight, there was no room for our truck and barely enough room between our front slide and the neighbors hook up to park our golf cart. Also the website states these sites have grills and chimneas--they do not. But there are other waterfront lots that are larger. If you have a larger rig, perhaps you should call to make your reservation to ensure you get what you need! Also, we were disappointed that many of the amenities were not yet in operation. I realize the COVID situation has likely affected this opening as it has everything else, BUT there was no indication that the water taxi would not be running, that the jump pad, the splash zone, the grill were not yet in operation. Again, this place is beautiful and worth the trip, I just expected a lot that I didn't get. If I give it another try, I will not use the online reservation desk, I will call to get a roomy site.
Response from the ownerWe apologize for not being able to give you the memorable experience you deserve and the experience we wanted you to have! We had so many "fun" activities planned for our guests for this weekend and wanted to show off our beautiful park but COVID affected all our events and amenities in ways we could not imagine. The weather did not cooperate, either. We were thankful when we learned we could open the new playground, at the last minute. Please come back for another visit... We truly care about our guests and will only get better with time!

Kim Morris2We recently stayed here for a week. Our waterfront site had beautiful views and we enjoyed fishing and crabbing in front of our camper. However, I feel that people should be notified of the amenities listed on your site that are not present! 1. No boat taxi 2. No jump pad 3. No snack bar 4. No water sports rentals 5. Recreation and events space not completed 6. No Wibit sports floating fun zone 7. No family swimming area 8. No grills or chimineas 9. No fish cleaning station 10. Full hookups but water pressure is so low that we needed to fill our holding tank. Also, several power outages occurred requiring us to use our generator. Other concerns: 1. Store is not stocked with groceries such as milk 2. Only given a campground map at check-in. No information provided on WiFi password, etc. On a positive note, the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Loved that they escort you to your campsite and provide trash pick- up at your site!
Response from the ownerThank you for providing feedback! We are committed to giving our guests a memorable experience. However, we cannot do that to the fullest with all our amenities and still keep everyone safe! We can provide a beautiful outlet for our guests to enjoy the great outdoors with their families.

Kevin Turner5Before we arrived for our 7-day trip through the 4th of July holiday, I read some negative reviews. OBX KOA is far from negative , first off a waterfront campground is already winning in my opinion. Upon arrival we were greeted by two friendly KOA staff members, they escorted us to our campsite. We have a half ton fifth wheel and I found the site to be very spacious. The site had a very nice deck with colorful seating and a table ( don't forget to bring a umbrella. there's an insert hole in the table) , it also had a large stone fire pit. There was a post for a barbecue grill, but that was not completed yet.... and we really enjoyed the rocker loveseat.... The power post had the usual KOA amenities , cable TV , and the different power options and water. I know there were some complaints about the water pressure. But I did not find it any different from any campground I have been to. The sound was beautiful ! Complete with about 5 piers and several boat launchs. At night the waterfront was lit with LED lighting around the perimeter. Lots of families come down in the evening to watch the beautiful sunsets. If you like to get up early you can also catch the equally beautiful sunrises. There was also a very nice store and ice cream restaurant , a game room. outside of the store there were two large fire pits , the jump pad and cornhole boards. The laundry room was air-conditioned. For me and my family my 7 days here was the best , we were sad to leave. I can understand that some people were upset that they did not have all the KOA amenities completed, But I still think they did not fall short. This is a very special place and anything else would only enhanced its greatness. Can't wait to come back next year.
Response from the ownerNow that is a review! Thank you so much! I will share this with my staff as they work really hard, rain or shine, to provide our guests with an amazing experience! We cannot wait to hear your review when you come next time... we can only get better! Robin.

Jason Whitcanack4My wife and I are full time RVers. We have been traveling around the country for months and have stayed in some amazing places. We enjoyed our week-long stay here but it wasn't the best stay we have had. This place scores off the charts for undisturbed natural beauty and we do recommend staying if you are in the area. This is the first non five-star review I have posted and I was on the fence about it. Ultimately, the shortfall in the hospitality category led to it. The staff, and there were a lot of them, we nice enough. But, it seemed like a struggle for them. Don't get me wrong. They were not rude. It just wasn't the level of hospitality we have experienced, especially in the KOA parks we have been to. I still recommend this location is you are looking for a beautiful isolated park.
Response from the ownerThank you, Jason! It has been a crazy first season with Covid. We are excited for 2021 and will be better than ever!
